چکیده

We present H-band spectra of the candidate counterparts of five ULXs (two in NGC 925, two in NGC 4136, and Holmberg II X-1) obtained with Keck/MOSFIRE. The candidate counterparts of two ULXs (J022721+333500 in NGC 925 and J120922+295559 in NGC 4136) have spectra consistent with (M-type) red supergiants (RSGs). We obtained two epochs of spectroscopy of the candidate counterpart to J022721+333500, separated by 10 months, but discovered no radial velocity variations with a 2-σ upper limit of 40 km s−1. If the RSG is the donor star of the ULX, the most likely options are that either the system is seen at low inclination (< 40◦), or the black hole mass is less than 100 M , unless the orbital period is longer than 6 years, in which case the obtained limit is not constraining. The spectrum of the counterpart to J120922+295559 shows emission lines on top of its stellar spectrum, and the remaining three counterparts do not show absorption lines that can be associated with the atmosphere of a star; their spectra are instead dominated by emission lines. Those counterparts with RSG spectra may be used in the future to search for radial velocity variations, and, if those are present, determine dynamical constraints on the mass of the accretor.

MOSFIRE: a multi-object near-infrared spectrograph and wide-field camera for the Keck Observatory

MOSFIRE, the multi-object spectrometer for infra-red exploration, is a near-IR (0.97-2.45 micron) spectrograph and imager for the Cassegrain focus of the Keck I telescope. The optical design provides imaging and multi-object spectroscopy over a field of view (FOV) of 6.14' x 6.14' with a resolving power of R~3,270 for a slit width of 0.7 arc seconds (2.9 pixels along dispersion). The detector i...

A Systematic Search for Near-Infrared Counterparts of Nearby Ultraluminous X-ray sources (II)

We present the results of our continued systematic search for near-infrared (NIR) candidate counterparts to ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) within 10 Mpc. We observed 42 ULXs in 24 nearby galaxies and detected NIR candidate counterparts to 15 ULXs. Fourteen of these ULXs appear to have a single candidate counterpart in our images and the remaining ULX has 2 candidate counterparts. Seven ULXs...

Yet another galaxy identification for an ultraluminous X - ray source ⋆

We report on the identification of the optical and infrared counterparts of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) XMMU J121214.5+131248 (NGC4168-ULX1). The optical spectrum yields a redshift of z = 0.217, which implies that the ULX is not associated with the nearby galaxy NGC 4168, but rather with a background object. Optical spectral line ratios and the spectral energy distribution constructed ...

Optical studies of ultra - luminous X - ray sources in nearby galaxies

Optical studies of ultra-luminous X-ray sources is an essential step in understanding the nature of these enigmatic sources, and in this paper we report our studies of five ULXs in NGC4559, NGC5194, NGC1313 and NGC628 observed with the Hubble Space Telescope and the 6.4 Magellan/Baade telescope. The ULX in NGC4559 is identified with four blue and red supergiants within a 0. ′′ 2 error circle, i...

Extreme Variability in a Broad Absorption Line Quasar

CRTS J084133.15+200525.8 is an optically bright quasar at z = 2.345 that has shown extreme spectral variability over the past decade. Photometrically, the source had a visual magnitude of V ∼ 17.3 between 2002 and 2008. Then, over the following five years, the source slowly brightened by approximately one magnitude, to V ∼ 16.2. Only ∼ 1 in 10,000 quasars show such extreme variability, as quant...
